Garden fountains are accessories to water ponds - be they small or large. The sound of flowing water, be it rippling or cascading are so relaxing that they add up to the peacefulness and tranquility of outdoors.

There are so many fountains to choose from. You can go for the dramatic fountains that are made out of cast stone. You can save space by going for wall fountains. There are so many finishing to select. There is the garden wall fountains that are appropriate for both indoor and outdoor use. There are sandstone finishes that add classy appeal.

Other factors we suggest you consider before deciding on the ideal fountain for you is your living space situation. Is your garden big enough to accommodate the outdoor fountains made out of copper, stone, and fiberglass? These fountains are normally so large that those who have big gardens consider these to be the center of their exterior.

Another factor that determines the kind of water garden fountain you purchase is if you have pets. If the fountain you get is on ground level, then your pet may think that it is a bathtub, or better yet for him, a swimming pool. Sometimes, they will even drink from it.

For others, water fountains, from the looks of it, may be daunting. You do not have to go to the mall yourself and check how much they are. Obviously, these are expensive. You have a water garden and you are already satisfied with a water feature that is appropriate for the landscape. A small water fountain can do the trick. It is not only cheap, it is also low-maintenance. As long as you hear the ripping of the water, your nerves will be relaxed. Why need a big fountain, right?

So you decided to build your own water garden fountain. Here are the steps:

1. Consult an electrician who could install the ground fault circuit interrupter near the man-made pond. The cord length depends on how far the fountain is from the pond. Ideally, the landscaping for the garden fountain is inches close to the patio so that while you are relaxing on the patio, you are soothed with the sounds coming from your fountain.

2. Remove the weeds that are surrounding the are you chose to put your water fountain. Double check whether the ground is level. Then that is when you dig the hole. This is where you will put the pond liner. In order for you to get the accurate dimensions of the hole, trace the preformed pond lining plastic and trace around the area.

3. Make sure that your hole is deep enough to accommodate the water garden fountain that you have in mind. Use sand to fill between the gaps. Sand can be used at the bottom because it is malleable and will let you have an easier time adjusting the height of the pond for your water garden fountain.

4. Before instilling the water garden fountain, check whether the ground is level, front and back, right and left.

5. Now you're ready to put your water garden fountain. If your main concentration on having a fountain is the decoration, then you should build a fountain that is cheap enough for you to go about the total costs. Make sure that you will be able to save more having done the job yourself than buying one and having technicians to install It for you in the first place.

6. This can be done sans plumbing, as a matter of fact. You can just drill holes in the bottom of your 'statue' and then another one on the top. With a knife, you can make the holes bigger so it would allow the plastic tubing to pass through easily.

7. Discharge the adapter of your pump by half an inch. This is where the water pushes out. Now that the plastic tubing has been fed through your statue, you can bring it over the man-made pond.

8. Fill the pond with water by putting the pump into the water, Let the tubing be submerge but at the same time, make sure that it remains hanging by the bottom of the statue. Double check that it is the right fit above the pump's adaptor.

9. Plug the pump into the outlet and watch the jet of water shoot out of the statue. You will enjoy it more because your very own hands are responsible for this project.

Getting Your Outdoor Water Fountain Ready For Winter

Author: Chris Gill

Winter’s coming, so it’s time for you to decide what to do with your outdoor water fountain. Water Fountain Place’s fountain experts routinely get requests on how to winterize or store garden fountains. Many fountains come with specific instructions about care and handling, so make sure to follow them. Otherwise, take a look at the following guidelines:

Get it Done Before the Frost

No matter how much you love the idea of running an outdoor fountain all year round the truth is that unless you live in an area where the temperature never drops below freezing you must shut your fountain down before the temperature dips below freezing. Even if there isn’t a full freeze, a few ice crystals can damage your fountain’s basin, ornamentation and pump. Pouring antifreeze in your fountain is not only not going to help, but will make your fountain a toxic, neighborhood danger. Don’t do it!

Get it Indoors If Possible

If your garden fountain is light enough to move inside, do it. Disassemble your fountain according to its directions, empty it out and store it in an area that maintains moderate above freezing temperatures to prevent cracking. If your fountain is too heavy to move, remove the fountain pump, empty, clean and dry it, and cover it with a form-fitting fountain cover. A tarp may blow off or create condensation. Disconnect and store electrical cords away from any snow, ice or moisture. If you can’t move your fountain, try to place it somewhere out of the way of snowdrifts, high winds areas that melt into stagnant pools.

Get Your Fountain Dry – But Keep Your Fountain Pump Wet

The key to keeping your outdoor fountain healthy through the winter is to keep it dry. Wipe it off and fill the basin with absorbent rags to prevent moisture from building up. If you do this while storing it somewhere where the temperature stays steady your fountain will last a long time. But while your fountain needs to stay dry, your fountain pump should stay submerged as much as possible to keep rubber elements from drying out. Clean your pump of any accumulated debris and put it in a bucket of water. Store this bucket in a location that never drops below freezing.

Can Your Fountain Work Indoors?

Many smaller outdoor fountains are actually dual use. You can plug them in indoors as well to enjoy their relaxing effects all year round. Check your fountain, but generally speaking, flat-bottomed or stub-footed water fountains that use household electricity, maintain regular water circulation and don’t emit a heavy mist can be installed indoors. Place your fountain on a waterproof surface such as Plexiglas, slightly raised from the floor, and allow for several inches to a foot of clearance on all sides. Make sure you no children or pets will drink from the fountain (or in the case of pets, use a nontoxic additive, but don’t let it become their regular water bowls!) and you can keep it running at room temperature through the winter. Indoor fountain maintenance is a simple process of keeping your fountain clean and maintaining water levels.

The Natural Beauty of Bamboo Garden Water Fountains

Author: Sandeep Silva

Bamboo is one of the most popular materials for outdoor garden fountains. Not only are these Zen-style water fountains very naturally appealing, they are known to attract positive energy as well. If you are interested in transforming your garden into an oasis with Japanese flare, a bamboo garden water fountain is the right choice.

Types of Bamboo Garden Water Fountains

There are two basic types of bamboo water fountains. The traditional stationary bamboo fountain consists of multiple hollow bamboo chutes with one chute typically placed upright or angled along the edge of the fountain reservoir for water flow. The other type is the shishi-odoshi (or deer chaser) bamboo fountain. In this type of fountain, a hollow bamboo chute moves back and forth as water flows through it. This creates a melodic sound in addition to the calming sound of flowing water. It is called the deer chaser because it was originally intended to scare deer away from gardens with the sound of the moving chute. There are many shishi-odoshi bamboo garden water fountain designs, with the most common one consisting of two vertical bamboo chutes inserted into the ground, and a central bamboo stick sandwiched between these serving as the water tube.

Creating Your Own Bamboo Fountain

Bamboo garden water fountains are an elegant and natural way to enjoy the soothing sound of flowing water in your garden. While you can find these fountains complete with a pump, you can also add a pump and bamboo spout to any container to create your own bamboo garden water fountain. There are a number of bamboo spout kits available on the market. Some bamboo spout kits are quite simple while others incorporate several bamboo sticks and figurines. There are also bamboo water wheel accessories available. By adding an adjustable bamboo spout, the water wheel spins continuously, resulting in a very visual appealing fountain.

Bamboo spout kits also make it easy to incorporate multiple water fountains in your garden at a reasonable cost. This will allow you to choose different yet complementary designs, and enjoy an Asian theme throughout your garden.

Bamboo Spitters

Even your pond can have a Zen-like quality. Decorative bamboo spitters are a great choice for your pond. These bamboo spouts can be placed at the edge of a pond to create a beautiful natural bamboo garden water fountain as in traditional Japanese Zen gardens. Not only do pond spitters provide the soothing sounds of splashing water, they can also add oxygen in small ponds.

The Hercules Garden Water Fountain at Kew Gardens

Author: Sandeep Silva

One of the most beloved landmarks in England's Kew Gardens is the Hercules garden water fountain at The Palm House Pond (as it's properly known, although tourists are allowed to call it just "Palm Pond" or "Hercules Pond"). Although originally built to add beauty and humidity to the next door's tropical greenhouse (The Palm House), it seemed to the designers that something seemed to be missing from the outdoor garden water fountain. It was a statue.

Say Hello To Hercules

Most of Kew Gardens was built and designed in the 1800's, when the art of the Greeks and Romans was especially revered. It was the only thing thought to be grand enough to place in an English garden water fountain. The pond was built in 1845, the same time construction was going on at The Palm House.

The sculpture of Hercules wasn't added until 1853. He is naked in the Greek tradition and wresting with a large, angry serpent (the Greek God Achelus) on top of a large square base (called a plinth). The whole thing is over six feet high. Properly, the statue in the garden water fountain is called "Hercules Fighting Achelus", but it usually just known as "Herc".

Francis Joseph Bosio

The sculptor who won the job at placing a heroic image in one of the most visited garden water fountains in the country was Francis Joseph Bosio (1768 – 1845), also known as Baron Francois Joseph Bosio. He was French, which somehow seem puzzling for England's premier garden water fountain. But then again, the subject matter of the sculpture was Greek. England has always had a bit of an identity crisis.

Bosiso was heavily influenced by Greek and Roman art and most of his surviving works are all in the style and subject matter of Greek and Roman myths. Mostly these were of large nude people and horses. Other sculptures resting in museums around the world include "Hyacinth Awaiting His Turn To Throw The Discus" in The Art Institute of Chicago and "Cupid with a Bow" in St. Petersberg.

However, Bosio is best known for the statues of angels and horses on top of the Arc de Trioumphe du Carrosel. How he exactly won the commission for the Hercules statue in The Palm House Pond's garden water fountain is not known, but in 1824 Bosio won renown for another Hercules and snake statue called "Hercules and the Lernaen Hydra". Besides his work, not much is known about Bosio.

After completion of the production the fountains are ready to be delivered or sold.IIf you have ordered for a concrete fountain then don’t expect that it will be done soon. Concrete water fountains take more time to get made. One thing to keep in mind is that the concrete fountain should be made in such a way so that it is easy to carry.

Should you purchase a solar garden fountain or a wired fountain? Both have their advantages and disadvantages but we have found that solar powered fountains are safer with children and animals with easier maintenance than wired fountains even though they do have the disadvantage of working poorly during the winter months. The panels on solar fountains make use of photovoltaic cells to collect sunlight throughout the day to operate the pump. Since they require sunlight the pump will slow down and the water will cease through the hours of darkness or if the sky is overcast.

Setting up a Solar Fountain

Solar fountains are easy to set up and the majority will necessitate no difficult installation. Solar fountains either have solar panels in the body or remote panels that may be sited at a distance. This allows it to be sited in a sheltered setting while the panels are positioned where they can collect the sunlight. The remote solar panels can be placed on a firm surface, attached to a tree or fence or on a wood pole planted securely in the earth.

Storing Energy

Most solar panels aren't capable of storing energy so they cannot be used at night. They will work most efficiently on sunny days but during overcast days they will only pump water slowly or stop altogether. For the duration of the winter it is a good idea to detach the solar panels as during very cold or freezing weather the pump may work intermittently when the sun is out and some damage could arise. Some solar fountains may have battery backups to make up for short overcast periods but most are actually only designed to be used only on sunny days.

Convenience

Solar garden fountains are convenient as they need no wires from the mains and can be located some distance from the home. With separate panels they might even be sited in out of the sun or in summerhouses.

Solar Pond Fountains

In addition many solar fountains are specifically made for ponds and are also handy as they don't necessitate cords from the house. They can be set to float on the pond or set them in place with rocks or fixed to secure them.

Solar Fountain Safety

Solar powered fountains are environmentally friendly without toxic emissions, hardly any noise and no substances that can seep out and be a danger. As there are no power cords they are not dangerous to animals and the family.

In Conclusion

Fountains powered by sunlight are cheap to run, easy to look after and safer than fountains with wires. While they have the shortcoming of working disappointingly through the colder months they will be, nevertheless, excellent additions to your garden.
